Give Attendees More Than Takeaways. Give Them the Connections.

September 29, 2026 Anne McColl

It’s the end of the conference. The coffee is gone. The name tags are curling at the edges.

Your three-day event lands as three separate events. People leave with 47 ideas and zero conviction about which one matters.

According to German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus, people forget about 50% of newly learned information within an hour, and up to 70% within 24 hours if there is no reinforement. That means nobody remembers which idea they were supposed to run with. The energy dies the moment everyone gets back to their inbox.

Give ‘em The Big Picture Debrief.

So before the closing keynote, let’s take a look back and tie it all together.

The speakers and panelists at conferences offer the expected information and inspiration.  The Big Picture Debrief delivers clarity about what matters.

After I’ve spent a day or several days graphic recording  keynotes, panels, workshops and conversations, I walk everyone through the boards as one connected conversation.

As a graphic recorder, I come from outside the organization, which gives me the freedom to ask the questions nobody else will:

  • What keeps showing up?

  • What’s missing

  • Which ideas seem to be building on each other?

  • What did people keep circling back to?

  • Where are two ideas rubbing against each other?

I name the themes that kept showing up, how they build on each other, and why they should matter to the attendees.

Adding meaning by creating hierarchy.

At a recent marketing conference for small business owners, AI came up everywhere. Speakers provided a tidal wave of information on platforms, prompting, automation, content creation, and all the new ways businesses could use AI.

But during The Big Picture Debrief, a more important idea started to surface beneath all those tactics: before choosing tools or building an AI strategy, business owners first needed to get clear on their own business.

  • What problem are they actually trying to solve?

  • Where were they losing time?

  • What do their customers need?

  • What should stay human, and where could AI genuinely help?

After the debrief, one attendee mentioned in event feedback that this was the idea that helped everything else click into place. Instead of leaving overwhelmed by platforms and prompt strategies, they left knowing where to begin: with the right questions.

That single takeaway created hierarchy in a conference full of information.

That’s the value of The Big Picture Debrief. The room doesn't leave with 47 ideas and zero direction. It helps them make sense of it, prioritize it, and see what matters next.
